Upland Mowing Residence, Waterbury, VT 2010

Design/Build

This landscape features an extensive selection of edible species including blueberry, pear, apple, cherry, strawberry and serviceberry as well as over twenty medicinal and culinary herbs. A stone patio and a double sided dry laid wall have been constructed amongst the diverse plantings.

Evslin Rain Garden, Stowe, VT 2009

Design/Build

This award winning rain garden combines an aesthetic, topographically varied garden with a functional example of low tech ecological solutions for addressing water runoff concerns. Water shed from the home's roof surface drains to a low depression in the landscape where water can accumulate in heavy storms and then percolate slowly into the groundwater. Drought/wet tolerant plants are chosen to thrive in this varied habitat.

North Hill Residence, Stowe, VT 2009

Design/Build

This landscape was built upon a hill overlooking a pond and garden stream. A stone wall serves as both a walkway and means of bank retention. Stone stairs and pathway help create an inviting water side garden space.

Ambler Design had provided design consultation and construction services for this residential property. In 2008 a stone patio and associated wall were constructed. Landscape Planting and Water runoff patterns have been worked with to develop a human scale landscape that is well placed between and home and nature.

Developed stone wall and landscpae planting design to plant effectively and aestheticallly screen private landscape from busy village center intersection. Carfeul consideration was given to tree species in this difficult growing location.

Concept Design and Consultation

Ambler provided design and consultation to examine ways in which stormwater management practices could be integrated into ecological and hydrologic landscape functions. Green Roofs, Rain Gardens, Depressed Field Space, Bio Retention Swales and other living treatment systems can all be used individually or integrated together to create a dynamic, ecologically functional system to manage stormwater on any scale-from the home to the town.

Design/Build

This home is perched on a hillside across from Mount Mansfield. A selection of hardy trees, shrubs and perennials were chosen to fit this home into its landscape. Whitespire Birch, Red and Yellow Twig Dogwood were planted to draw out the features of the native woodland landscape.

Omega Institute, Rhinebeck, New York, 2004

Conceptual and Schematic Drawings, Water Use Master Planning

This project, Designed by Dr. John Todd transforms the waste treatment process of the Omega Institute into an energy building landscape. Living systems such as pretreatment wetlands, an 'Eco Machine' treatment greenhouse and subsurface irrigation discharge all contribute to systems that can provide food, keep nutrients local and effectively recharge groundwater. Sub contractor for John Todd Ecological Design.

Arbor Garden Seven Springs, Tabor Hill, Stowe Vermont, 2003

Design and Consultation

Sitting above Stowe village, this estate property was restored and reinvented. We provided design and consultation services for this extensive parcel. Landscape features include a walled formal garden with a stream and wetland graciously integrated into the design. A stone bridge, stone pillars and custom wrought iron fencing makes this a delightful hidden garden room.

Design and development of Steiner based craft and medicinal center. Worked with renowned Welsh architect, Christopher Day in the design and construction of organic buildings that included Cob Walls, Green Roofs and Timber Framing. Worked with Dr. Margaret Calhoun, director of Pishwanton Wood in planning the landscape site design.
